The Federal Government has commenced the distribution of food and nutrition support items under the Presidential Initiative for Food and Nutrition Assistance in Benue State, aimed at supporting vulnerable households affected by displacement, insecurity, and loss of livelihoods. This was contained in a statement signed by Chinyere A. Ulasi, Head, Information and Public Relations, Unit.
The flag-off ceremony was led by the Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard M. Doro, while the Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, was represented by the Deputy Governor, Sam Ode.
Dr. Doro described the intervention as an urgent humanitarian response and a strategic step toward linking emergency assistance with long-term social protection, including conditional cash transfers and livelihood support through the National Social Register.
In his welcome remarks, the Permanent Secretary, FMHAPR, Mr. Olubunmi Olusanya underscored the importance of coordinated and data-driven humanitarian response. “This intervention reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to shock-responsive social protection, improved targeting through the Social Register, and effective last-mile delivery. Our goal is to ensure that assistance reaches intended beneficiaries with dignity and fairness,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the Governor, the Deputy Governor, his Excellency Sam Ode expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the timely intervention, noting that many communities in the state have suffered displacement and destruction of farmlands.
A highlight of the event was the direct engagement with beneficiaries, as government officials personally distributed items to internally displaced persons, persons with disabilities, elderly citizens, and other vulnerable groups, including families from Guma Local Government Area.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and collaboration with the Benue State Government to strengthen resilience, restore livelihoods, and support sustainable pathways out of poverty.
Some Directors of the Ministry were also present at the flag-off.
