The Nigerian government has applauded the establishment of the World Data Organization (WDO), describing it as a significant step toward strengthening global data governance.

The Spokesperson of the Nigeria Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, made this known while speaking to journalists at the inaugural assembly of the World Data Organization held on Monday, March 30, 2026, at the International Conference Centre in Beijing, China.

Ebienfa emphasised the importance of a secure, transparent, and rule-based global data system, noting that the establishment of the WDO is a welcome development. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to effective data management, structured access, and collaboration with relevant international stakeholders.

The World Data Organization is designed to bridge global digital divides, and Nigeria’s participation underscores its commitment to international cooperation in data governance and digital infrastructure development.

Headquartered in Beijing, the WDO is a non-governmental, non-profit platform aimed at coordinating global data collaboration. It is positioned as an open, international body for industry players, researchers, and institutions, with a mandate to bridge data gaps, unlock data value, and drive digital economic growth.

The inaugural assembly brought together institutions and companies from multiple countries to promote cooperation across the global data ecosystem.

The launch of the organisation comes at a critical time, as data is increasingly recognised as a strategic resource driving industrial advancement and economic expansion.
