In the present world, where once-curable infections are fast becoming death sentences, the global spotlight is shifting to Africa, and Nigeria is stepping forward with a decisive response.

Nigeria is set to host the 5th High-Level Ministerial Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) from 28th to 30th June 2026 in Abuja, marking the first time the prestigious global health summit will be held on African soil.

The landmark gathering is expected to bring together delegations from over 100 countries, including heads of state, ministers, and global health experts, in a united effort to confront one of the world’s most pressing health threats.

The event, themed “One Health, Advancing Global AMR Commitments through Local Action,” will be hosted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, positioning Nigeria at the forefront of a global movement to curb antimicrobial resistance, a silent pandemic responsible for millions of deaths worldwide.

The high-level ministerial meeting aims to accelerate the implementation of multisectoral national action plans to tackle AMR, a growing crisis driven by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines.

Health experts warn that AMR is already among the top 10 global health threats, affecting not only human health but also animals, food systems, agriculture, and the environment.

Drug resistance renders treatments ineffective, making infections harder and sometimes impossible to cure.

According to global estimates, nearly 4.9 million deaths were associated with AMR in 2019, with a target now set to reduce deaths by 10% by 2030.

The meeting will convene leaders from diverse sectors, including health, agriculture, environment, and finance ministries, alongside global organisations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).

Key figures, including Dr Ayoade Alakija, Nigeria’s Ministerial Global Envoy on AMR, and Dr Jean Pierre Nyemazi, Director of the Quadripartite Joint Secretariat on AMR, have emphasised the urgency of coordinated global action.

The summit will take place in Abuja, Nigeria, between June 28 and June 30, 2026, with Nigeria playing host to the world at a critical moment in global health diplomacy.

The meeting will build on commitments made at previous global gatherings, including the UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on AMR 2024 and the Jeddah Ministerial Meeting, using a “Troika mechanism” to ensure continuity, accountability, and measurable progress.

A key focus will be on the “One Health” approach, recognising that human health is deeply interconnected with animal health, agriculture, and environmental systems.

Experts also stress the need for sustainable financing, noting that every $1 invested in AMR response yields an estimated $11 return, making it not only a health priority but an economic imperative.

Beyond policy discussions, the summit represents a turning point in global health leadership, shifting attention towards the Global South, where the burden of AMR is most severe.

It also underscores the critical role of the media in driving awareness, accountability, and behavioural change.

As the world prepares to converge on Abuja, Nigeria is not just hosting a conference, it is shaping the future of global health security, with the potential to save millions of lives through decisive, collective action.
