Nigeria has taken a bold step toward the future of digital connectivity with the formal inauguration of the National Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) Council in Lagos.

The high-profile ceremony, held on Thursday at the Marriott Hotel, Ikeja, brought together key regulators, industry leaders, and internet governance stakeholders committed to accelerating Nigeria’s transition to next-generation internet infrastructure.
Leading the event was the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, alongside the Executive Commissioner, Technical Services, Engr. Abraham Oshadami, and Executive Commissioner, Stakeholder Management, Barr. Rimini Makama.

Also inaugurated were prominent members of the newly constituted council, including Mr. Muhammed Rudman, National President of the IPv6 Council; Dr. Chris Uwaje, National Vice President; Tony Emoekpere, Council Member; and Mr. Adesola Akinsanya, President of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) and Council Member.

The inauguration signals a strategic national push to modernise Nigeria’s internet ecosystem as the world rapidly exhausts IPv4 addresses and embraces IPv6 — the advanced protocol designed to deliver stronger security, faster connectivity, and limitless device scalability.

With digital transformation at the heart of Nigeria’s economic ambitions, the council is expected to champion awareness, policy direction, technical readiness, and nationwide adoption of IPv6 across public and private sectors.

Industry watchers say the move places Nigeria on a stronger path toward smarter cities, expanded broadband penetration, robust cybersecurity, and a more competitive digital economy.

As global internet evolution gathers pace, Nigeria’s message is clear: the future is now, and the nation is preparing to lead it.
