The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Zimbabwe, highlighting shared liberation history and growing cooperation, as it congratulated the Southern African nation on its Independence Day anniversary.
This was contained in a statement signed by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, to mark Zimbabwe’s Independence Day celebrated annually on April 18.
Nigeria described the anniversary as a defining moment in Africa’s collective struggle for freedom and self-determination, noting that Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980 remains a symbol of resilience and national aspiration.
“This historic milestone represents the culmination of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle and its transition to sovereign statehood,” the statement read. “It reflects the resilience, determination, and aspirations of its people.”
The Federal Government commended Zimbabwe’s role in promoting African unity and cooperation, particularly through its engagement in regional and international platforms such as the African Union and the United Nations.
“Nigeria acknowledges Zimbabwe’s contributions to regional and continental affairs, especially in advancing African solidarity, economic cooperation, and multilateral engagement,” Ebienfa stated.
The statement further emphasized the long-standing diplomatic ties between both countries, rooted in their shared experiences during the struggle against colonialism and their continued collaboration on issues of peace, security, and development.
According to the ministry, Nigeria and Zimbabwe have sustained cooperation across critical sectors, including trade, education, agriculture, capacity building, and cultural exchange.
“The bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Zimbabwe continues to evolve across key sectors, driven by mutual respect and shared aspirations,” the statement noted.
Nigeria also underscored the importance of strengthening people-to-people connections, describing them as vital to deepening cultural affinity and fostering continental integration.
On the future of relations, the Federal Government reiterated its readiness to expand engagement with Zimbabwe through sustained diplomatic dialogue and strategic partnerships.
“On this auspicious occasion, Nigeria reaffirms its commitment to further consolidating bilateral relations and advancing cooperation that supports economic growth, democratic governance, and regional stability,” the statement added.
The government extended its goodwill to the people of Zimbabwe, wishing the country continued peace, progress, and national prosperity.
