The Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) has called on its staff to embrace a culture of excellence, professionalism, discipline and customer-focused service delivery as it commemorates the 2026 Customer Service Week, themed “Extra Mile.” The Commission emphasised that effective and efficient service delivery remains fundamental to organisational success and public confidence in government institutions. This was contained in a statement signed by Ibraheem Zakariyya, anipr, Head, Press, and Public Relations. For: the Commission.

Speaking at the celebration on Tuesday, while declaring the event opened in the Commission’s headquarter, Abuja, the Director Overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary (DOOPS), Dahiru Mohammed Lawal, urged staff to demonstrate greater commitment to their responsibilities by consistently delivering timely, efficient and quality services to Civil Servants, Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), and members of the public.

Lawal described service delivery as a responsibility that must not be compromised, stressing that the success of every organisation depends largely on the quality of services it provides. He encouraged staff to discharge their duties with passion, integrity, discipline and a strong sense of responsibility, noting that going the extra mile is an essential way of improving service standards and fulfilling the Commission’s mandate.

The DOOPS further urged staff to recognise that the value of quality service extends beyond immediate recognition or reward, as every positive interaction contributes to public trust and institutional reputation. He encouraged employees to give their best at all times, irrespective of whether immediate appreciation is forthcoming, and to ensure that every assignment is executed effectively and professionally.

However, the Team Leader, Dr. Ben Olofu, explained that Customer Service Week provides an opportunity to celebrate and appreciate employees who consistently exceed expectations in serving customers. He noted that the 2026 theme, “Extra Mile,” reinforces the importance of anticipating customers’ needs, providing additional guidance, resolving complaints promptly and demonstrating a willingness to go beyond routine responsibilities.

Olofu also highlighted the importance of teamwork, innovation and collaboration across departments in achieving service excellence. He stressed that effective customer service is not the responsibility of frontline officers alone but a collective obligation requiring every unit and staff member to contribute towards resolving issues promptly and ensuring a positive service experience.

The celebration underscored the FCSC leadership’s commitment to strengthening a service culture that prioritises professionalism, responsiveness, accountability and the satisfaction of its stakeholders. It also served as a reminder that small but consistent acts of excellence—including getting appointment, promotion and disciplinary decisions right the first time—can significantly improve service delivery and reinforce public confidence in the Commission.

The event concluded with a call on all staff to make the extra mile a daily professional standard rather than a once-a-year celebration, as the Commission continues to pursue its mandate of promoting an efficient, effective and merit-driven Federal Civil Service.
