The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a Medium Flood Risk Advisory warning of likely localized flooding across parts of the country from July 14 to July 20, 2026, with at least 13 states expected to be affected.
In its advisory released on Tuesday, the agency highlighted rising water levels along key river channels, placing several communities, schools, and health facilities at significant risk. Critical monitoring stations identified include Saminara on the Karam River, Waya Dam Site on the Waya River, and Amber on the Amber River.
NIHSA listed Adamawa, Borno, Bauchi, Kaduna, Edo, and Imo among the most impacted states, alongside seven others yet to be fully detailed. In Adamawa State alone, 147 communities, 49 schools, and 40 health facilities across Demsa, Lamurde, and Numan Local Government Areas are at high risk.
Similarly, in Borno State, 680 communities, eight schools, and six health facilities in Gubio and Mobbar LGAs face potential flooding. Other affected areas include Bauchi State (Bauchi, Ningi, and Shira LGAs), Kaduna State (including Chikun, Giwa, Igabi, Jaba, Jema’a, Kachia, Kaura, and Kauru), as well as several LGAs in Edo and Imo states.
The agency urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and take proactive safety measures to reduce risks.
“Communities living along floodplains and riverbanks must be ready to relocate to safer, higher grounds where necessary,” NIHSA advised.
It also warned against attempting to cross flooded roads or fast-moving water, either on foot or by vehicle, noting that such actions could lead to loss of lives.
Residents were further advised to clear drainage systems, secure valuables and livestock, and prepare emergency kits containing clean water, first aid supplies, and other essentials.
NIHSA called on the public to stay informed through its official channels and local emergency agencies as river levels continue to be monitored daily.
The advisory is part of ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of seasonal flooding and strengthen disaster preparedness nationwide.
Authorities also urged citizens to share the information widely to ensure vulnerable communities are adequately informed and prepared.
