The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command CP Nnanna, has extolled youth engagement in sport as a powerful tool for crime prevention and other anti-social behaviours
He stated this in his address during the celebration of 2026 International Youth Day.
His words: “I am delighted to join you today as we commemorate International Youth Day 2026, and particularly to support this important walk against all forms of thuggery including digital thuggery.and Anti-social Behaviour
“International Youth Day is a global reminder of the importance of young people to the development, peace, and security of our societies. This year’s theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” reminds us that although young people may come from different backgrounds, they share common hopes for dignity, opportunity, safety, and a better future.
“Youth engagement in sport is also a powerful tool for crime prevention. Countries such as the United Kingdom, United States, Netherlands, Canada, and Australia have used organised sports, alongside mentoring and youth development, to divert young people from crime and anti-social behaviour.
“As we engage in this walk today, let us remind ourselves that sport gives young people something positive to aspire to. It builds discipline, teamwork, confidence, and healthy relationships while keeping them meaningfully engaged and away from negative influences. In this regard, we should see sports not only as recreation but also as an investment in crime prevention and community security.
“Crime prevention, however, is a responsibility we must share. Crime often has its roots in negative peer influence, drug abuse, poverty, unemployment, intolerance, and manipulation. Today, these dangers can also extend into the digital space, where social media can be misused to spread false information, incite violence, and recruit young people into criminal activities.
“To our youths, I say: do not allow yourselves to be used as instruments of violence or digital thuggery. Your future is far more valuable than any temporary reward.
“The Police cannot prevent crime alone. We need the partnership of our young people, parents, schools, religious and traditional leaders, civil society, and the wider community.
“As we walk today, let us walk with a commitment to peace, responsible citizenship, responsible use of technology, and the rejection of crime and violence.
“Our young people are not the problem. You are an important part of the solution. Together, let us build an Anambra where our youths can live safely, dream freely, and achieve their aspirations legitimately.
“On behalf of the Anambra State Police Command, I wish all our young people a happy and meaningful International Youth Day 2026.
