The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) will assume responsibility for collecting mineral royalties from mining companies nationwide beginning January 1, 2026.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the NRS Chairman, Dare Adekanmbi, in Abuja.

The statement says this follows ongoing reforms under the Nigeria Tax Laws 2025, which empower the NRS to oversee all federally collectable revenues.

According to the statement, the decision was reached during a meeting in Abuja between the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, and the NRS Chairman, Dr. Zacch Adedeji where both agencies agreed to deepen cooperation to ensure a seamless transition.

The statement explains that the ministry will maintain its regulatory mandate, providing technical support such as mineral pricing data, geological information and industry coordination.

According to the statement, the new system aims to enhance transparency, strengthen compliance and improve revenue reporting in the mining sector.

It states that both institutions assure operators that the change will not disrupt activities, as a nationwide sensitisation campaign and a modern digital royalty administration platform are being prepared to guide companies through the new process.

The statement urges mining firms to continue fulfilling their legal obligations and participate actively in the upcoming engagement programmes.
