The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has congratulated Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, as the country celebrates its 69th Independence Anniversary. The message reflects Nigeria’s solidarity with the government and people of Ghana on this historic milestone.
Ghana gained independence on March 6, 1957, becoming the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to break free from colonial rule. The achievement inspired many African nations, including Nigeria, to pursue sovereignty, dignity, and self-determination.
Nigeria joined the Ghanaian people in commemorating this important moment in African history while also recognizing Ghana’s consistent contributions to democratic governance, regional integration, and peaceful development across the continent.
Both Nigeria and Ghana share a long-standing relationship built on common historical experiences, cultural connections, and shared aspirations for African unity. Over the years, the two countries have remained key pillars of democratic stability in West Africa.
The partnership between the two nations has been strengthened through high-level diplomatic engagements and cooperation in trade, education, energy, defence, migration management, and cultural exchange. The movement of people between both countries has also enhanced economic and cultural ties.
Nigeria acknowledged Ghana’s role in promoting democratic governance and regional peace, noting that both countries have collaborated in peacekeeping missions and mediation efforts across the sub-region under organisations such as Economic Community of West African States, African Union, and United Nations.
The Nigerian government reaffirmed its commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Ghana through stronger economic cooperation, diplomatic engagement, and cultural exchanges while wishing the country continued peace, democratic consolidation, and sustainable development.
