The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and with support from the European Union, has begun preparations for a new national framework to strengthen Nigeria’s border management system.Multilateral Organizations

The development followed a three-day Top Management Workshop held at Zuma Rock Resort, Niger State, from September 27 to 30, 2026, to review the 2019–2023 National Border Management Strategy (NBMS) and its Action Plan.

The review is expected to provide a foundation for the next policy cycle covering 2027–2031, with emphasis on addressing emerging migration, border management and security challenges.

Speaking during the workshop, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nanna Nandap, said the new strategy must be built around credible migration data, effective implementation mechanisms and sustained collaboration among relevant government agencies.Africans & Diaspora

She said the review should produce a clear and practical framework capable of responding to emerging challenges while strengthening Nigeria’s role in promoting integrated border management across Africa.

The workshop brought together NIS top management and development partners for strategic discussions, technical sessions and group presentations focused on the progress and implementation of the previous strategy.

Participants also consolidated the outcomes of the review and identified key areas requiring attention under the proposed 2027–2031 policy cycle.

The process culminated in an NIS Executive Management Endorsement Session, where key recommendations were reviewed and endorsed, while proposed interventions, financing options and the strategic direction for the new policy cycle were considered.Visa & Immigration

The NIS said the engagement reflects its commitment, alongside its partners, to strengthening collaboration and improving Nigeria’s border management system.

The review is expected to contribute to a more coordinated approach to border governance, migration management and national security as Nigeria prepares to enter a new five-year policy cycle.
