The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has unveiled a new Load and Outage Analytics platform aimed at improving visibility, monitoring and management of the nation’s transmission network.
The technical presentation and live demonstration of the platform, developed by TCN’s Operations Department, was held on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at the company’s Corporate Headquarters in Abuja.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of TCN, Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, represented at the event by the General Manager, Project Coordination, Engr. Aminu Tahir, commended the team for developing the software and integrating it into the company’s operations.
Abdulaziz said the platform had already enhanced visibility of the transmission network despite the full system not yet being deployed.
According to a statement by it’s Management on Thursday, he stressed the need for improved load management, supply-demand matching and system analysis, noting that technical and commercial losses remained major concerns affecting the performance of the transmission network.
According to him, better load management and improved grid stability would help reduce outages, enhance operational efficiency and minimise the financial impact of prolonged interruptions.
The main presentation was delivered by the General Manager, Operations, Engr. Godwin Afamefuna Aguiyi, who said TCN’s existing reliability reporting system was affected by fragmented data, manual reporting processes, inconsistent calculation of key performance indicators and the absence of a comprehensive audit trail.
He explained that these challenges often delayed management decisions and weakened national reliability assessments.
Aguiyi said the new Streamlit-based platform comprises 13 modules designed to unify transmission operations. He noted that it was conceived and developed entirely in-house by the Operations Department, less than a year after the creation of TCN’s Transmission Service Operator (TSO) department.
The platform provides region, station, transformer and feeder-level views for load analysis, automatically classifies outages, generates reliability performance reports and produces board-ready reports within minutes.
It also incorporates role-based access, structured data uploads and audit trails, while individual staff credentials are expected to eliminate shared logins and improve accountability.
Using July 2026 outage data as a demonstration, Aguiyi disclosed that 3,714 outages were recorded nationwide during the month, resulting in 48,603 megawatt-hours (MWh) of load lost.
He said the Lagos region accounted for 20,693 MWh of the total, comprising 572 emergency outages, 306 forced outages and 129 planned outages.
He further disclosed that 22 feeders exceeded allowable outage hours, with associated losses valued at ₦720.33 million. The OBOSI feeder in Onitsha, for instance, recorded 1,063.74 MWh in lost load at Band A rates.
Aguiyi clarified that the feeder-level figures represented the portion of outages for which TCN was accountable in July, distinct from outages attributable to electricity distribution companies.
The platform also incorporates the Fault Attribution Ratio (FAR), a regulatory framework used to determine responsibility for service interruptions between TCN and Distribution Companies (DisCos).
He explained that under the applicable Service Level Agreement, TCN’s allowable downtime responsibility is 30 percent, while DisCos account for 70 percent, stressing that the percentages represent an allocation basis for permitted downtime rather than a fixed split for every individual outage.
He added that each outage is separately attributed based on the identified fault type and responsible network segment.
According to him, full deployment of the platform, alongside the required interface energy measurement devices, would also facilitate monitoring of the Transmission Losses Factor (TLF) across the network.
Aguiyi recommended nationwide deployment of the platform, integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technology for real-time data capture, and upgrades to systems, display screens and internet connectivity at transmission stations.
Also speaking, the Executive Director, Human Resources and Corporate Services, Mrs. Abiodun Afolabi-Fadahunsi, reaffirmed management’s commitment to equipping engineers and system operators with the tools required to strengthen national grid stability.
She said management was monitoring daily grid reports to address operational challenges in real time and would continue to support technical teams in sustaining reliable grid operations.
The unveiling represents a significant step towards digitising TCN’s outage and load management processes and replacing fragmented, manual reporting with a centralised data-driven system.
