The United Nations on Thursday launched the 2026 Nigeria Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP), aimed at addressing the country’s most urgent humanitarian challenges, especially in conflict-affected and vulnerable communities.
The event featured an opening speech by the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr. Mohamed Malick, who highlighted the need for stronger collaboration among government, humanitarian partners, and local organisations to respond effectively to humanitarian crises across the country.
The keynote address was delivered by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Doro, who was represented by the Minister of State, Yusuf Tanko. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable populations and strengthening humanitarian interventions nationwide.
Also represented at the launch was Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, who emphasized the importance of sustained humanitarian support in the Northeast, particularly for communities affected by conflict and displacement.
Other key participants included Dr. Susan Tanwie, Executive Director of Sirri Care Foundation, who spoke on behalf of national non governmental organisations (NGOs) in the Northeast, stressing the critical role of local NGOs in delivering life saving assistance and reaching underserved communities.
The launch of the 2026 HNRP underscores Nigeria’s continued efforts, in partnership with the United Nations and humanitarian actors, to address humanitarian needs and build resilience among affected populations.
