The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has joined global voices in mourning the passing of Nigeria’s former President, General Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a distinguished statesman whose leadership left an indelible mark on the continent.
In a heartfelt condolence message signed by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, the regional body expressed deep sorrow over Buhari’s death, offering sympathies to the bereaved family, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Government, and the people of Nigeria.
“ECOWAS salutes the memory of this distinguished statesman whose invaluable contributions greatly advanced democracy and regional integration in West Africa and across the African continent,” the statement read.
The Commission praised Buhari’s role in promoting democratic ideals and fostering unity among West African nations.
The condolence message was issued in Abuja on 13 July 2025.
