The President of the Association of West African Legislative Correspondents (AWALCO), Mr. Innocent Odoh has extended heartfelt congratulations to Muslim journalists and the wider media community on the successful completion of the holy month of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr. This was contained in a statement signed by Princess-Ekwi Ajide, Publicity Secretary, AWALCO.
In a goodwill message, Mr. Odoh praised journalists for their resilience, courage, and unwavering dedication to truth and accountability across the West African sub-region despite evolving challenges in the media landscape.
Describing Eid-ul-Fitr as a powerful symbol of sacrifice, discipline, and spiritual renewal, the AWALCO President urged journalists to reflect these values in their professional conduct and daily engagements.
He called on media practitioners to rise to the occasion by using their platforms as instruments for peacebuilding, unity, and regional integration.
“At a time when our region faces complex security and socio-political challenges, the role of journalists has never been more critical. You are not just storytellers. You are bridge-builders, agenda-setters, and custodians of public trust,” Odoh stated.
“Let your reports promote understanding over division, truth over misinformation, and unity over discord. West Africa needs a media that inspires hope, fosters dialogue, and strengthens the bonds that hold us together.”
Mr. Odoh further emphasised the responsibility of journalists to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, including accuracy, fairness, and ethical reporting, noting that credible journalism remains a cornerstone for sustainable development and democratic growth in the region.
He encouraged journalists to seize the spirit of Eid as an opportunity to recommit to impactful storytelling that advances peace and strengthens democratic institutions across West Africa.
The AWALCO President wished all Muslim faithful a peaceful, joyous, and fulfilling Eid celebration, praying that the blessings of the season bring renewed hope and prosperity to the region.
