The Federal Government has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa to Nigeria over recent protests and reported attacks targeting foreigners, including Nigerians, in South Africa.
According to a statement signed by the Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Acting High Commissioner is expected to meet with officials of the Ministry on Monday, May 4, 2026, in Abuja.
The Ministry said the meeting is aimed at formally expressing Nigeria’s deep concern over recent developments capable of straining the longstanding diplomatic relations between both countries.
The discussions are expected to focus on ongoing demonstrations by some groups in South Africa, as well as reported cases of harassment, mistreatment of Nigerian citizens, and attacks on businesses owned by Nigerians.
The Ministry noted that many Nigerians have expressed growing concern over the treatment of their compatriots in South Africa.
However, it appealed to citizens to remain calm, assuring that the Federal Government remains committed to safeguarding the rights, safety, and welfare of Nigerians living in South Africa.
