The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has reinforced its commitment to digital security and data protection with the organisation of a two-day Cybersecurity Awareness Programme aimed at strengthening the cyber resilience of its personnel and safeguarding critical national data.
The programme, themed “Cyber-Aware Nigeria Immigration Service,” was organised by the Service’s ICT and Cybersecurity Directorate and held on June 16 and 17, 2026, at the NIS Headquarters Auditorium, Shehu Shagari Complex, Sauka, Abuja.
The initiative was designed to enhance officers’ understanding of cyber risks, improve data security practices, and strengthen their capacity to protect the Service’s digital infrastructure and sensitive national information from emerging cyber threats.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Deputy Comptroller-General in charge of the ICT and Cybersecurity Directorate, DCG A. Obianime commended the Comptroller-General of Immigration for her commitment to reform, digital transformation, and institutional capacity development. She noted that the programme was intended to deepen cybersecurity awareness across all levels of the Service and build on previous efforts to strengthen its defence against cyber threats.
Declaring the programme open, the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, represented by the Deputy Comptroller-General, Planning, Research and Statistics Directorate, DCG D.M. Bagari stressed that cybersecurity must remain a collective responsibility as the Service continues to expand its digital operations.
According to her, the NIS, as a custodian of critical national data, remains a high-value target for cybercriminals and other hostile actors. She also directed the ICT and Cybersecurity Directorate to extend similar awareness programmes to formations nationwide in order to strengthen institutional resilience against cyber threats.
The training featured expert presentations on building a cyber-aware immigration service, understanding the NIS threat landscape, cybercrime foundations, intelligence gathering in the digital era, as well as practical strategies for cyber threat prevention, investigation, and international collaboration.
The programme forms part of the Service’s broader efforts to promote a strong cybersecurity culture and ensure the protection of Nigeria’s critical digital assets in an increasingly technology-driven environment.
