The Ministry of Interior in collaboration with the Code of Conduct Bureau has organised a workshop aimed at sensitising staff on the critical importance of compliance with the Code of Conduct for Public Officers and the necessity of declaring their assets as required by law. This was contained in a statement signed by Ozoya Imohimi, Director, Press and Public Relations Department.
In her opening remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, stressed the significance of the workshop, noting that it was designed to inform participants on how to avoid running afoul of the law.
“It is very important that we take this as seriously as it should be taken. Make sure you attend the lectures from beginning to end. First, it will give you sound knowledge of what the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) is all about.
“Additionally, we have structured the sessions by grade levels so that you will be equipped with information that is specific for your level,” she said.
In his keynote address, the Acting Chairman, CCB, Barr. Murtala Kankia, who was represented by CCB Board member, Mr. Z. I. Bulus, highlighted the personal responsibility of public officers in upholding professional values.
He remarked, “One thing about the code of conduct for public officers is that it is personal to each staff, not to the organisation. The responsibility to declare your assets is personal, and it is a constitutional requirement.”
Barr. Kankia also commended the Ministry for organising the workshop, noting that such efforts are crucial in ensuring that public officers remain compliant with the law.
Welcoming participants, the Director of Human Resources, Mrs. Rebecca Okon, reinforced the importance of compliance with the Code of Conduct and asset declaration.
“Compliance with the Code of Conduct and asset declaration is not only a statutory obligation but a fundamental aspect of building public trust. It reflects our dedication to good governance, combating corruption, and fostering a culture of accountability in the public sector.
“This workshop is an opportunity to reinforce these values, enhance our understanding of the relevant guidelines, and ensure strict compliance,” Mrs Okon emphasised.
The workshop provided a platform for robust discussions and practical guidance, underscoring the need for public officers to maintain transparency, integrity, and accountability in the discharge of their duties.
