The Labour Party has called for a National State of Emergency in Nigeria’s teaching sector, urging the Federal Government and other authorities to urgently address the poor welfare, working conditions and professional development of teachers across the country.Political Campaign Materials

In a message marking the 2026 World Teachers’ Day, the party described Nigerian teachers as the “bastion of the nation’s knowledge and learning,” acknowledging their critical role in shaping children and youths who will become the country’s future leaders.Political Strategy Consulting

The party, however, expressed concern over what it described as the pitiable condition of teachers, noting that educators continue to demand better learning environments for pupils and improved conditions of service for themselves.

According to the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the party stands firmly with Nigerian teachers and remains committed to advancing their welfare.

“Given our shared history through the Labour Movement to the birth of the Labour Party, the Party enjoins Nigerian teachers not to waver in their faith in the Labour Party as the pathway to improved welfare and better conditions of service for Nigerian teachers,” Asogwa said.Teacher Welfare Resources

With the 2027 general elections approaching, the party urged teachers to support its candidates at all levels, insisting that the Labour Party remains the political vehicle best positioned to promote their interests and secure a dignified future for them.Election Forecasting Services

The party cited developments in Abia State, where Governor Alex Otti has, according to the party, fulfilled campaign promises made to teachers, as an example of what could be achieved under Labour Party leadership.

The Labour Party said the Abia experience would be replicated across the country if its candidates are elected into office in 2027.

It also called for increased investment in the teaching profession, including the training and retraining of teachers, improved learning environments and better remuneration and working conditions.Political Strategy Consulting

“No nation can genuinely grow where those entrusted with moulding the future generations of its citizens are themselves ill-equipped, poorly motivated and inadequately rewarded to perform their duties,” the party stated.

The Labour Party further argued that the popular saying that “a teacher’s reward is in heaven” should not be interpreted as a justification for neglecting teachers’ material welfare.Education Policy Research

“Teachers should not be starved to death,” the party said, stressing that educators deserve decent living conditions and adequate rewards for their contributions to society.

The party concluded by celebrating Nigerian teachers and reaffirming its commitment to a country where teachers are respected, adequately rewarded and provided with the tools and conditions required to effectively shape the nation’s future.

Asogwa issued the statement on behalf of the Labour Party on October 5, 2026, to mark World Teachers’ Day.Political Campaign Materials
