The Nigeria Police Force has taken a major step toward sustainable policing with the introduction of compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered operational vehicles, marking the beginning of its transition to green energy.

According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the initiative was unveiled on April 21, 2026, with the presentation of three specialised buses to the Force by the Nigeria Police Trust Fund and the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles.

Speaking at the event, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, described the transition to CNG and electric vehicles as a strategic move aligned with global best practices in logistics, cost efficiency, and environmental sustainability.

He noted that the new vehicles would enhance personnel mobility and welfare, while also reducing operational costs associated with fuel consumption.

The leadership of both partner organisations said the donation represents the first phase of a broader plan to modernise the Police fleet, including the conversion of existing operational vehicles to CNG.

They added that the initiative goes beyond equipment provision, incorporating capacity-building programmes to ensure long-term sustainability and efficiency in fleet management.

The IGP also disclosed plans to establish internal conversion centres within the Force to support maintenance and technological adaptation of the new systems.

The ceremony featured the formal handover of vehicle keys and inspection of the buses, underscoring a collaborative effort to equip the Police with cost-effective and environmentally friendly mobility solutions.

The Police said the initiative reflects its commitment to innovation, operational readiness, and improved service delivery in a rapidly evolving energy and security landscape.
